Barcode is the advanced innovation coming in the form of computer peripheral employed for reading printed barcodes on different kinds of surface. This feature is also known as barcode scanner. This is just like a flat-mat scanner, which has a basic light source connected to the lens and photo conductor. This device provides the translation of optical impulses into the electrical format. Most of the barcode readers in the recent form have the improvised decoder circuitry which analyses the barcode image data through the photo conductor. This in turn sends the contents of the barcode to the output port destined at.

Mainly the barcode readers are using PS/2 or USB cable for output purposes. In which, the PS/2 cable-connections are joined to host computer in the manner that it will remain in 'Y' form. Wherein, the PS/2 keyboard port remains in the first end and the other end to the keyboard. The third end is connected to the barcode reader. The character-by-character units then appear on the computer by getting converted to keyboard input which remains within the scanner housing. This makes the interfacing of the barcode most simple and easy for all sorts of written applications needing keyboard inputs. This feature however, has certain limitations like when the data produced through the barcodes is to be processed; the same can not be undertaken by this process.

Types of Mechanisms for Barcode Keyboard:

The barcode readers may adopt another equipment of RS-232 output port, which makes the decoded characters appear through the RS-232 connectors. However, this will require a small program called as software wedge. This program collects the data from the barcode reader and sends it through the application to the desired destination. The inclusion of this application allows the user to interface in most controlled manner. Many of the new types of the scanners are using the USB as their choice in which HID, CDC interface types are also made available. The IBM has the proprietary interface having the use of SDL type connectors, with RS485 protocol based system. Another output type is known as the Wand emulation which accepts the rave waves and translate them through the decoders which streamlines the output for facilitating easy decoding.
